Home — Fledged in eastern Ohio, landed in Pittsburgh, nested in Arkansas, and migrated back to Pittsburgh, to an urban cabin overlooking one of the three rivers.
Work — Messing with words: writing, editing, proofreading, coaching other writers, transcribing interview tapes.
I worked at a daily newspaper for 20 years. My first job there was looking in the nice homes of strangers and writing about them (the homes, not the strangers) in a real estate advertorial section. For three years I reported on religion. For most of my years there I was a copy editor, catching mistakes, improving punctuation, writing headlines, and generally making the rough places smooth. I have crossed “stop the presses” off my bucket list. If you subscribe to your local newspaper, thank you.
Play — Irish traditional music, kayaking on calm waters, exploring Pittsburgh, drawing, hiking, washing dishes by hand, committing random acts of singing. And, of course, writing, which is both work and play, and, in a sense, home.
