I could have called this “Advent for Dummies,” but I’m not writing for dummies, and I might be hassled for copyright infringement.
I would have called this “Advent for Dolts,” but that’s a joke only my mother would get, and she’s been gone a long time.
While “ignoramus” seems an old-fashioned playground epithet, maybe a cousin to “doofus,” it is actually a Latin word. It means, simply, “We do not know.” I myself am somewhat ignorant — lacking knowledge — about Advent. Hence, some ramblings on this last day of the church season called Advent, by an ignoramus whose church does not observe it. …
Advent: You could look it up. Or ask folks who seem to be paying attention to it, who are part of openly liturgical churches that observe it. So I asked some folks who have been writing or drawing through this season: “What is Advent? To you? Be as individual and quirky and possibly ahistorical and countercultural as you want. Also as traditional. Thanks.”
